About John C. Hughes

John C. Hughes John C. Hughes, D.C. is a noted authority on the history of hypnotism and the author of several books, including The Roots of Hypnotism in America. He is the Research Editor of the Journal of Hypnotism, a bimonthly publication and recipient of numerous professional awards. Dr. Hughes has been active in the field of hypnotism for over 50 years and is noted as a teacher of hypnotism in numerous courses and workshops; a founding member of The National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), founder of the Philippine Hypnodontic (dental hypnosis) Society, past-president the Association to Advance Ethical Hypnosis, and a director of NGH.

Dr. Hughes was featured in a documentary film on hypnosis by the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) that was telecast throughout Canada and the United Kingdom. He received national media coverage for his involvement in painless childbirth, multiple extractions, and dental surgery, once receiving headlines emblazoned in red for officiating at one of the first successful painless childbirth cases in Illinois.

His new book, The Illustrated History of Hypnotism: from Franz Anton Mesmer to Milton H. Erickson is a monumental history that charts the development of hypnotism from ancient times to the start of the modern era. This classic book is a major contribution to the literature of hypnosis and will be used as a source book and reference volume for many years to come. Dr. Hughes is working on an updated and expanded third edition of Hypnosis: The Induction of Conviction.
